Singapore Ones Are Well Made, But Not The Ones From India |
For most disc burning, we usually just go to a local store and pick up some blank discs. For CD's, it wasn't a problem, as most companies could produce 50-100 CD-R spindles with no more than 1-2 "coasters" (a coaster is a disc that is either no good or failed at burning). This is because CD's are very simple, and much easier to manufacture. Now, we're stepping into DVD+R and DVD+R DL. I made the mistake of buying 100 DVD+R's from GQ or HP or someone, and about 5 discs failed to burn, while most of the other discs I burned would either last for about a month to one year before becoming unreadable. DVD+R DL further brings out this problem, as almost every DVD+R DL not made by Verbatim will not burn properly or will be a coaster within a year.
So, for proper burning, this is our only option. Taiyo Yuden does not make dual layer discs (at the time of this review), so Verbatim is our only option. However, they made a very foolish mistake by manufacturing their discs in India. The one pack I bought that was made in India, about 6 of the discs would not burn, and about 5-6 eventually failed to be readable (this is out of 20, so less than half of the discs are usable). No matter what write speed I choose (whether it's 6x or 2.4x), I usually end up with a disc that's bad or one that will eventually be bad.
They still make some in Singapore, which still work 100% (never had a single coaster, and I've burned several of them). I've never had a single coaster from a disc made in Singapore. All of the advertised write speeds work just fine, but some DVD readers may have trouble reading a disc that's burned too quickly, so for compatibility's sake, you should burn them as slow as you can. This applies to pretty much any blank CD/DVD though.
So why the 3 star rating? Well, I'll give the India-made discs 1/5, as they don't really work, and I'll give the Singapore-made discs 5/5, as they are as perfect to perfection as you can get for these, so it averages out to 3/5. Unfortunately, Smart-mp3 does not seem to list anywhere where these discs are made, so you probably have a 50/50 shot at it. There's a lifetime warranty on both versions, so you don't have a lot to lose either way.
Equipment Used: I've used Samsung, BenQ, and Lite-On writers to test all of these on custom-built PC's. |

Received May 14, 2010 |

Just received mine. Shipped out of Phoenix. They have "Made in Singapore" on the labeling. So far 2 out of 2 good burns. All other DL's I've tried on my Macbook Pro 13" have given me a 70/30 (Bad Burn/Good Burn) success rate, not good. I'd almost given up on burning DL's thinking it was the burner. Nice to know it was just bad media. Good luck and hopefully only "Made in Singapore" discs from now on. |

Great Media |
|
This to me is the best media to burn to. I burn home movies to this and not once have I have any failures like I have had with other blank dvd media. Highly recommended. |

Reliability at its best |
|
There really isn't any other choice for Dual Layer DVD's. I have been using them for years, backing up numerous things from Data to Media, and I have YET to have one fail me. Great product... really, don't try the other brands. Pay a bit more for these, they won't fail, you save money in the long run. |
